Matthew Edgar has mixed emotions regarding the new controversial changes to the Euro Tour for 2024. The recent announcement by the PDC regarding the modification of qualification requirements for European Tour tournaments has created quite a stir among players.
The New Qualification Structure
In 2024, the qualification structure for PDC European Tour tournaments will undergo significant changes. The most notable change is that the top 16 players in the world rankings will now automatically qualify for an event. However, the top 16 in the PDC Order of Merit will also be invited, although they will have to start the tournament in the first round. This means that Tour Card holders will have fewer opportunities to earn starting berths in the qualifying tournament, with the number of available positions being reduced from 24 to just ten.
Understanding Both Sides
Matthew Edgar, a previous Tour Card holder, understands all sides of the argument. He acknowledges the frustration of players who might feel frozen out or struggle to qualify under the new rules. “If I was a player in that situation, I wouldn’t be happy. Because I’d think, ‘now it almost freezes me out or I’m going to struggle to get into those’,” Edgar explains.
However, he also recognizes the perspective of the PDC in making these changes. “On the other side, yes they’ve restricted the opportunity, but they’ve only done that within their organization,” says Edgar. He highlights the concern that Tour Card holders often express regarding the lack of protection and opportunities they receive compared to non-card holders. “We’re the Tour Card holders and we don’t get opportunities, but they’re giving opportunities to all these who don’t have a Tour Card. We’re the PDC players, why aren’t they looking after us?” Edgar questions.
He points out that Associate members, who do not hold a Tour Card, have opportunities to participate in events anywhere they want. This disparity in opportunities has been a longstanding issue for Tour Card holders and is a key factor in understanding the rationale behind the PDC’s decision to modify the qualification structure.
