Luke Humphries, the rising star in the world of darts, showcased his exceptional skills once again as he secured consecutive victories in the BetMGM Premier League. His outstanding performance in Nottingham on Thursday propelled him to the top of the league table.
After triumphing in Brighton last week, Humphries continued his remarkable form by clinching the Night Seven spoils at the Motorpoint Arena. He defeated top-ranked players Michael Smith, Peter Wright, and Nathan Aspinall to claim the £10,000 bonus and surpass Michael van Gerwen in the Premier League standings.
In the semi-finals, Humphries faced a resilient Smith, with whom he had previously battled in the Night Six decider. Displaying immense composure, Humphries showcased his brilliance by averaging 103 and securing a third consecutive victory against the 2023 World Champion.
Following this, Humphries faced Peter Wright in the semi-finals, whom he defeated convincingly with a 6-1 win. Exhibiting exceptional accuracy, Humphries averaged 106, setting up an intense showdown against Night Five winner Nathan Aspinall.
Although Aspinall, the Stockport star, managed to make a comeback after trailing 4-1, he ultimately fell short as Humphries capitalized on his missed opportunities. With legs of 13 and 14 darts, Humphries sealed a 6-3 victory, claiming the Night Seven title.
Expressing his delight, Humphries stated, “I’m really proud to be top of the league.” He emphasized the importance of winning despite not performing at his best in the final. With an impressive record of ton-plus averages in 12 out of 15 matches this season, Humphries acknowledged the challenges of playing against the world’s best players and acknowledged the significance of every point.
Looking ahead, Humphries eagerly anticipates his first visit to Dublin for the Night Eight quarter-finals. He expressed his excitement about playing in a venue renowned for its incredible atmosphere. With his Irish heritage, Humphries considers it a special occasion.
In other matches held in Nottingham, Nathan Aspinall secured his place in the finals after defeating Rob Cross and Luke Littler in the East Midlands. Aspinall showcased his exceptional skills by recovering from a 5-4 deficit to deny Cross in the quarter-finals, and then producing a dominant performance against Littler in the semi-finals, winning 6-3 with an average of 104 and landing five 180s.
Meanwhile, Luke Littler’s wait for a nightly victory continues, although his performance against Michael van Gerwen in the quarter-finals was extraordinary. The 17-year-old prodigy displayed an average of 114 and hit eight 180s, securing a memorable win against the Dutchman, who also put up an impressive average of 110.94.
The BetMGM Premier League continues with Night Eight in Dublin on March 21. With Humphries aiming for a third consecutive win, the competition promises to deliver thrilling matches.
